With the Northern District cleared of undead incursion, the Coalition regrouped with Sir Lloyd for a combined assault on the remaining undead at the gates. With every step away from the Mage Tower, the lingering scent of Ozone was replaced with the growing sounds of combat. Where the roads came together a small bastion had been put together. The gathered townsfolk, local militia forces, and several of the Coalition's own holding the line against the undead. The makeshift barricade kept the undead at bay while the forces of Freyharbor used pitchforks, swords, and spears to keep the advancing undead from overtaking their defense. With a quick wave Terran beckoned them forth, preparing to speak.
Terran was curt in his address, directing the gathered Coalition members to prepare for a counter incursion against the Undead. Terran would lead Freyharbor in a rush forward, pushing back the current wave of Undead and giving the Coalition an opportunity to scale the wall, make it to the gatehouse, and seal the city.
At Terran's command, the forces of Freyharbor advanced forward! Hurdling over their makeshift barricade and assaulting the undead. Rambunctious and loud they quickly begin to forcibly take ground against the unsuspecting undead ghouls. After a curt advance the undead begin rallying, baring their assault against the townfolk. In turn, the Coalition rushed forward, advancing through the distracted undead and Freyharbor citizens, forcing their way to the city wall. Acting swiftly, the druids Mordecai and Tierney flew to the top of the wall and lowered a rope for the coalition to climb to safety and to access the gate controls. With little delay, the Coalition found themselves atop the city's wall.
With the wall scaled, the Coalition glanced below, the undead were pushing harshly against the city's forces and once more pushed them back to their encamped position. For every undead killed by Freyharbor, three more seemed to stream in through the city's wall. With a curt glance outward, hundreds of undead had amassed outside the walls, primarily mindless ghouls and zombies, some struggling to climb the wall below. Their mission was known, and the Coalition continued steadfastly onward.
As they continued, an inhuman shriek echoed over the Coalition's heads. A pair of Gargoyles encroached upon the Coalition. With quick thinking Kitra and Ariandael aimed to distract the oncoming Gargoyles and drive them away. With mixed success, one of the Gargoyles veered off its path, and the other ... came to rest on the way, blocking their way forward. Acting as swift as ever, Waylare Huxton rushed forward, aided by Mordecai. The Gargoyle was caught off guard as it's feet were wrapped with Vines, locking it in place. In the same breath, the Gargoyle turned to stone, seeking to protect itself from the vines. Instead it found Huxton's assault landing true. Huxton managed to tackle the Gargoyle, knocking it to the ground as the Vine's kept it immobile, resulting in it shattering against the wall.
Further along the wall their destination laid ready to receive them, as did the familiar scent of Ozone. Through the gatehouse window, the skeletal form of a bonemage could be seen. Not prepared to give such a foe the chance to act first they rushed the opportunity to put it down. Though half of the Coalition's forces attempted to enter the door in the same step, a decision which found all of them equally stuck, the remaining Coalition members were able to quickly put the Skeleton on the back foot. Caught by surprise it acted rashly, trying to force the Coalition away and shouting inane nonsense. Before any threat was able to develop the remaining Coalition members pressed their assault, finding themselves free of the doorway. In one swift motion, Tierney delivered the final strike, a Moonkin's beak delivered directly through it's eye socket.
The control mechanisms had not quite been spared of the Skeleton's efforts, frozen over and damaged. With the combined efforts of Kitra and Mister Huxton, the controls were thawed and given a makeshift repair. As the mechanism was turned, a grinding screech came from the gears, slowly meandering along until the gate itself begins to move, each door of the gate drawing slowly shut, sealing off the remaining undead. As the gate finally shut solidly, silence overtook the room. A silence which lasted but a moment.
In the distance untold warhorns blared to life, drawing the attention of the undead below. Coalition members who gazed out the windows saw a mass of soldiers descending from the southern hills. Cresting down the ridges, a large force of iron and rune ridden Dwarves, axes and hammers brought to bear. In short work they descended the hills, slamming into the gathered undead. The Iron Dwarves assault was brutal and effective against the undead. As they cut forward they took aim for the gates directly, a small force arrived and pushed the undead back. Amidst the crowd, one slightly smaller dwarf took a moment to gaze upward towards the Coalition, scowling at them before returning to his attack against the undead.
Seeing strange iron dwarves arrive to fight the undead on the outside of the gates, the coalition did not think too hard on it just yet, taking it as a momentarily blessing; instead, they opted to immediately address the remaining undead within the gates. Waylare, dove forward with the support of the Coalition, delivering a crippling blow to the undead's rear guard. With a rain of arrows, and druids, from above, the remaining Undead were wiped out and the Coalition reunited with Freyharbor's forces.
And so ... Freyharbor was finally under control, once more..
